The Family Steering Committee for the Independent 9/11 Commission officially formed after the 9/11 Commission was signed into existence on November 27, 2002. The Committee’s ultimate goal was to identify and subsequently correct those circumstances that contributed to the failure of our government to protect its citizens on September 11. To aid the Commission in fulfilling its mandate, the Family Steering Committee provided the Commission with a list of 400 questions that needed answers. The Family Steering Committee monitored the Commission’s work from beginning to end, making every effort to ensure that the Commission fulfilled its mandate. To the dismay of the Family Steering Committee, who intended the questions to be answered publicly under oath, Condoleezza Rice was the only member of the Administration compelled to do so. President Bush and Vice President Cheney only agreed to testify together behind closed doors, not under oath, and the Commissioners were not allowed to take notes.

Following the release of the 9/11 Commission’s Final Report on July 22, 2004, the Family Steering Committee determined that only 130 of its questions were adequately answered, leaving 270 questions still unanswered. The Family Steering Committee has released a report rating the performance of the 9/11 Commission in answering each of its questions. Click above to view the report.
