There will be two changes when the FluMist vaccination program returns to the county's public, private and charter schools this year.

The vaccine to protect against influenza will be offered in high schools after being limited to elementary and middle school students last year. Also, this year, one dose of the nasal spray vaccine will protect against seasonal flu and the H1N1 swine flu, said Jean Munden, director of the Alachua County Health Department.

Munden said last year's vaccine program was not available to high school students because there were not enough doses. This year, the Health Department will receive approximately 20,000 does of the vaccine, she said.

The vaccination program will start with private schools in mid-September and move to the public school system in October, Munden said.

Alachua County School District spokeswoman Jackie Johnson said permission slips required to participate in the free vaccine program will be sent home with students during the first week of school.

The deadline to return them is Oct. 1.

Johnson said slips also will be available at school orientations and, in the next few days, on the school district's website: www.sbac.edu.

Last year, 70 percent of the district's eligible students were vaccinated either through the FluMist program in schools or through a shot at a doctor's office or clinic, Johnson said.

Meanwhile, Munden said the Health Department likely will start offering flu shots and the FluMist to adults some time in September. The typical charge is $25, and Medicare covers a flu shot.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has approved the FluMist for ages 2 to 49. For more information on the vaccination, go to the CDC website:  www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/nasalspray.htm
