Dear friends,For some reason The Gainseville Sun continues to print my letters to the editor, including the one below about electing Jeb Bush as a Senator from Florida, which appeared in the Sunday newspaper on December 7 The Gainesville SunLetters to the Editor - Dec. 7 Jeb Bush's return is a very bad idea Now that Mel Martinez, a decent man and politician, has announced that he will retire in 2010, many are already anointing Jeb Bush as his successor. Although the chubby-faced politico labeled himself an agent of the future when in office, let's examine his record. He hired a private firm to glean the 2000 election results to hand the state to his brother, George. He privatized Florida agencies back to the Victorian era for his cronies. He did a poor job equipping the state to handle matters over the Internet (we are still living with that legacy). He promised to save the Wekiva River and held it in limbo for eight years, letting it get worse and worse. Worst of all, he initiated a constitutional amendment to eliminate the bullet train that could by now be running from Miami to Tampa, at a huge savings of energy, time, trouble, gas and carbon emissions; perhaps the most ignorant public policy choice in recent history. Please, please do not let this man become a U.S. Senator, no doubt part of his plan to be the third Bush to arise to the presidency. Let's kill this scheme before it gets started. David J.
