Scottsdale, AZWherever Carole Pellatt goes, she sees "chemtrails" in the sky.

The talented local guitarist and rock school director is borderline-obsessed with the debunked conspiracy theory, creating Web page after Web page of pictures showing the criss-cross pattern of jet contrails against a blue sky -- haze she claims may be slowly poisoning people.

She recently e-mailed us her latest series of photos with captions that refer to Janet Napolitano's new post as Homeland Security secretary in a kind of loose, black-helicopter-pilot poetry.

Pellatt seems sincere enough, but could never present the slightest evidence of her claims in several e-mail exchanges with New Times -- as is true of all the chemtrail true believers.

Chemtrails, as a subject, is one of the first Internet-driven conspiracy theories and possibly one of the biggest, next to the ones about 9/11. The non-scientific term that was apparently invented by conspiracy theorists fetches nearly a million hits in a Google search. The one reference to chemtrails in any official document -- a failed Congressional bill -- was put there by the zany theorists themselves.

In any case, we pass along Pellatt's work for your perusual. At the least, her pictures of the sky and airplanes invoke tranquility -- unless you see them as she does. -- Ray Stern
