The shooting of teacher, Kofi Adu-Brempong by University of Florida police officers is an important story. It speaks to the professionalism of UF's police agency, the adequacy of the university's procedures for coping with mentally distressed students and the very state of UF-community relations.
It is important that this story be told as completely and fairly as possible. But on two occasions Sun reporter Nathan Crabbe has been barred from access to meetings held between UF officials and members of concerned groups; once with residents of Corry Village, and once with representatives of groups protesting the shooting.
This story will be reported one way or another. Forcing news reporters to get their information secondhand, from those who were allowed to attend, does little to help ensure a fair and accurate accounting of events.
UF is facing a potential community relations disaster. Sunshine, not quasi-secret meetings, will better serve the interests of both the university and the public.
