" The second video is about the "investigation" of the levee system failure. The third video was recorded the week of the disaster as thousands of elderly, handicapped, children, their caretakers and poor remained stranded in the city without food or water and were forcibly blocked from walking out of the city. It's interesting to watch the Mike Myers/Kayne West Red Cross appeal that took place in the middle of the post-levee collapse chaos. West's deadly accurate comments caused such a stir that no one paid attention to what Mike Myers was saying. Independent Investigation Into Pentagon Attack Yields Alarming Information

A three year independent investigation into the September 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon has yielded new eyewitness evidence which, according to the Southern California-based researchers who conducted the investigation, “conclusively (and unfortunately) establishes as a historical fact that the violence which took place in Arlington that day was not the result of a surprise attack by suicide hijackers, but rather a military black operation involving a carefully planned and skillfully executed deception.” They have compiled the most pertinent testimony into an 81 minute video presentation entitled National Security Alert, which has earned the respect and praise of a growing number of distinguished academics, journalists, writers, entertainers, pilots, and military personnel. The investigation involved multiple trips to the scene of the crime in Arlington, Virginia, close scrutiny of all official and unofficial data related to the event, and, most importantly, first-person interviews with dozens of eyewitnesses, many of which were conducted and filmed in the exact locations from which they witnessed the plane that allegedly struck the building that day. It was primarily conducted by two men named Craig Ranke and Aldo Marquis, also known as Citizen Investigation Team, or CIT.

“There were a growing number of people in the United States and around the world who were suspicious of the government’s story about what had happened at the Pentagon that day,” Ranke explains. “The doubts were initially fueled by the dubious damage to the building, which seemed incompatible with a 757 crash, the deliberate lack of transparency by the authorities, and many other issues, but they really intensified after a team of professional pilots (Pilots for 9/11 Truth) analyzed the data obtained from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) via a Freedom of Information Act request in 2006, which was supposedly from the black box of American Airlines Flight 77, and found that the last reported altitude of the plane was far too high to have struck the light poles or the building. This meant that either the plane did not cause the observed physical damage, that the government had released fraudulent data, or both.” “We were tired of the cover-up, but we were also frustrated with the dead-end theorizing that was taking place”, says Marquis of the project’s genesis. “We knew that the only way we were ever going to know what had really happened was if we actually went to the area, knocked on doors, and interviewed everyday people about what they saw.” When these eyewitness accounts are aggregated, they paint a very disturbing picture, say the researchers. “To put it as concisely as possible, the plane had to have flown on a very specific flight path in the final seconds before it reached the Pentagon in order to have caused the observed damage, starting with the light poles that were photographed on the ground and ending with the directional damage to the building itself which was outlined in detail by the American Society of Civil Engineers,” explains Ranke. “The government claims the plane flew on this flight path and hit the building. The eyewitnesses in all of the most critical vantage points, on the other hand, independently, unanimously, and unequivocally report a drastically different flight path, proving that the plane absolutely could not have hit the light poles or the building. It is a non-controversial scientific fact that a strike from this trajectory would have caused a very different damage path.” It wasn’t just witnesses who watched the plane approach the building that the team spoke with, however. “We’ve also published our interview with a Pentagon police officer who saw the plane flying away from the Pentagon immediately after the explosion”, says Marquis. “We already knew that the plane could not have hit based on the testimony of the witnesses on the other side of the building who watched it approach, but it was still vindicating to get this kind of confirmation.” A 2006 Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll found that “More than a third of the American public suspects that federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East.” Nevertheless, Ranke and Marquis acknowledge it is still quite controversial to claim, as they do, that “criminal elements within the U.S. government” were complicit in the attacks. “If you are skeptical of (or even incensed by) this statement we do not blame you,” reads a note on the front page of their website, CitizenInvestigationTeam.com. “We are not asking you to take our word for it, nor do we want you to do that. We want you to view the evidence and see with your own eyes that this is the case. We want you to hear it directly from the eyewitnesses who were there, just as we did.”

Many people seem to be taking them up on this offer. Their video has already received almost 70,000 views online since it was first posted to their website a few weeks ago with only a grass roots promotional effort behind it. Perhaps more notable than the size of the audience, however, is the caliber of some of the people in it. A newly-published compendium of endorsements on the CitizenInvestigationTeam.com website includes praise from a wide array of distinguished and well-respected Americans.

Emmy-award winning actor and former president of The Screen actors Guild, Ed Asner, calls the film a “reasoned, and methodical look at witness testimony the day the Pentagon was attacked on Sept. 11th”.

Prolific non-ficition author Dr. Peter Dale Scott, Professor Emeritus of the University of California, Berkeley affirms that the film “successfully rebuts the official account of Flight 77’s flight path on 9/11 as it approached the Pentagon”.

”If you accept the placement of the plane as independently and unanimously reported by the witnesses presented in CIT's video National Security Alert, science proves that it did not cause the physical damage at the Pentagon on 9/11/2001”, says FAA certified pilot Robert Balsamo.

Dr. David Ray Griffin, author of The New Pearl Harbor Revisited: 9/11, the Cover-Up, and the Exposé and many other titles, says he is “pleased to be able to recommend this important film with enthusiasm”, while scholar, author, and radio host Dr. Kevin Barrett says that the film proves ”that the official version of the attack on the Pentagon is false, and that the attack must have been a deceptive military operation, not the kamakaze crash of a hijacked commercial jet.”

Scott McKinsey, an award-winning network television director, says “The DVD offers no theorizing or speculation; only corroborated eyewitness evidence contradicting the official flight data to support an overwhelming argument that a plane did not slam into the Pentagon on 9/11”.

Architect Richard Gage, AIA, founder of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth (AE911Truth.org), a coalition of over 700 professional architects and engineers calling for a new independent investigation of the destruction of the three skyscrapers in New York on 9/11 (the third was World Trade Center 7), calls the film “long overdue, but worth waiting for” and says that it “deserves serious attention”.

Retired Navy Commander and aviator James R. Compton calls National Security Alert “the best reporting I've seen in a long, long time” and “a must see for every citizen in our country”.

The following is my reply to John Perna per a US Patent Application filed, with one aspect of the patent being for the Swine Flue virus vaccine (H1N1). The patent application was filed long before the Mexican Swine Flu supposedly came forward as a new strain of virus coming out of a "Pig Farm" in Mexico.

In John's post copied in part below my reply, he thought the patent application for the H1N1 vaccine was from 2008 shortly before the swine flue broke out in Mexico.

I am familiar with patents, so I took a look at the US Patent and Trademark site to verify what he was bringing forward was correct and found he was in error. The original application was actually filed in 2007. Long before the virus was staged as an outbreak of "a new viral strain" in Mexico.

As far as I am concerned, this now verified information puts the last nail in the coffin for the immediate suspension of all forms of "civil" government in this country for reorganization under limited purview and then reinstatement. And I hope, no I pray that when done in end result they axe 85% or more of the attorneys from the system. That is 90% of the solution right there.

Here you will see the virus references to the viruses as noted above and it did so on "08/28/07" long before the virus was promoted as a "New and Deadly Strain" morphed out of a pig farm in Mexico.

So, upon my personal reflection of the matter: They can take that vaccine and shove it up their A** and what can't fit they can do the same to the US Propaganda ministry and their talking head wh***s in the syndicated news media that have promoted the swine flu frenzy.

Pheonix Chemtrail Air Quality Test Results

Chemtrails - Shocking Phoenix Air Quality Test Results

Recently, a reader sent me data on air tests performed in the Phoenix area. These charts show a number heavy metals are present in the environment at levels far exceeding the safe toxic level standards for human health. The person who performed the air sampling had it analyzed by a professional laboratory, and has asked for confidentiality. Exact location in Phoenix of the samples collected and names involved will not be disclosed in this report.
I have personally seen the actual report with the name of the person who and location where air was sampled and the name of the testing laboratory, and certify that the report appears authentic.
Scans of the report provided to me of laboratory results were sent as files of more than 1MB in size each. Each chart has been reduced in size here to fit on your screen by this author. One chart was rotated for proper orientation but has not been altered in any other way.
DATA COLLECTION METHOD
a. Air was sampled through an air filter which operated approximately 4 hours during the day and 4 hours after sunset for 28 days.
b. Method used by the test laboratory was defined as "ICP scan, inorganic analysis."
c. Short columns in the charts indicate the maximum safe level for a given metal.
Tall columns are the measured amounts found in the filter for a given metal.
d. MCL = Maximum Containment Level
e. Chart values are shown in parts per billion. To convert any reading to parts per million (which is often more convenient for a mental comparison) simply drop three zeroes from any value shown on any chart.
f. I have provided the calculations on how many times each metal is over each toxic health limit. For example, in Fig. 1 barium is 278 times (or 278x) higher than the toxic health limits set by federal standards.
Fig 1 ­ In this chart we see that barium is 278x the toxic limit, copper is 98x the toxic limit, manganese is a staggering 5,820x the toxic limit and zinc is 593x the toxic limit
Noteworthy here is that manganese is an element commonly found in the environment and soil in small quantities. However, manganese is also a toxic element. This element is the black electrolyte material found in batteries (dry cell types) before the advent of alkaline batteries took over the battery market. Manganese is still used in cheap batteries and commonly provided with remote controls.
Barium, copper and zinc are also heavy metals. Copper and zinc are used by the human body's metabolism but only in very small amounts. Barium is a common contrast agent used for X-ray diagnostic imaging, but it is not used in powder form. It is suspended in a liquid form for contrast enhancement of X-rays to outline digestive tract soft tissue.
Barium and aluminum (more on aluminum later) are commonly found in chemtrail fallout. These two compounds were also described by Dr. Teller in his weather modification paper as two possible agents that could be spread by aircraft into the upper atmosphere. His intention was to use them as reflective agents for sunlight in an effort to reduce global heating.
However, anyone who has ever been inside a tent an hour or more after the sun comes up on a cool day knows it will get hot inside quite fast. It could be that Teller's theory is flawed, and that instead of reflecting the sunlight barium and aluminum are accelerating global warming. After several decades of chemtrail spraying weather records clearly show our planet is not cooling off. In the spring of 2008, the US army announced the problem is with the Sun and that global warming is not directly caused by civilization.
Fig 2 ­ Here we see that cadmium is 126x the toxic limit, chromium is 282x the toxic limit and nickel is 169x the toxic limit. Note that the permissible amount of Cadmium in the environment is equivalent to a tiny ten parts per billion.
These metals are commonly used for steel manufacturing and electro- plating. All are toxic in significant amounts.
Fig. 3 ­ Here aluminum is a staggering 6,400x the toxic limit, iron is 28,000x the toxic limit, magnesium is 5.3x the toxic limit, potassium is 793x the toxic limit and sodium is 15.9x the toxic limit.
SPECIAL TEST RESULTS FOR ALUMINUM
According to the reader providing the data, for unknown reasons aluminum results are commonly provided by an "out of state test lab." It's also interesting that of all the contaminants, aluminum had the highest reading of all metals over the safe toxic limit by 6,400x. I will not comment here on my opinion as to who may run that lab or the data source, but will leave that to the reader's imagination. As bad as aluminum being 6,400 times the toxic limit it may also be that the actual level of aluminum is far higher than what we see here.
Although physically lighter in weight than steel or other metals, aluminum is still considered a heavy metal. Like Teflon®, aluminum is very difficult to remove from the human body.
It is also well known that for unknown reasons, aluminum has been found in higher than normal concentrations in the brains of deceased Alzheimer's patients. It is also known that Alzheimer's disease is on the rise. Perhaps finally a connection can be made here as to the source of the illness, but more science would need to be done to confirm this. A correlation between aluminum levels in the air for various cities and Alzheimer's statistics needs to be made. This is outside the scope of this report.
Clearly, there must be a source for these very high levels of heavy metals in the Phoenix environment. It could very well be a direct result of chemtrail spraying, since the trails have been commonly seen in the sky over Phoenix and other cities. If these levels are elevated in Phoenix's air, it may stand to reason that the same problem is happening all over the country elsewhere. It's quite possible that these various metals are elevated in different amounts in the air over other cities. More tests like this are needed for other cities, with air sampling and analysis performed in the exact same way to allow proper correlation.
FUTURE TEST RESULTS
I strongly suspect that once this report is public and those behind the chemtrail spraying see this, obtaining similar laboratory tests in the future may become more difficult. A cover-up may even take place if certain corporate or government interests are threatened by this revelation.
Anyone having similar air tests performed by a laboratory in the future should stay at the test lab for as long as it takes, and watch the test results as they are obtained from start to finish. If they will not permit this then find another reputable laboratory. Leaving the laboratory and returning for the report, or accepting an email of the test results is not wise. It may result in altered or lost test results
These lab tests could serve as a rough guide as what to expect from air tests in other cities. For example, if aluminum or barium levels are stated as near normal for lab tests of air in other large cities, those results should be suspect. I would not recommend that an entire air filter be given to any one test lab, but rather carefully collected samples that have not touched by human hands from the filter. Ba intoxications disturb the sodium- potassium ion pump--another key feature of the MS profile. The co- clustering of various neurodegenerative diseases in these Ba- contaminated ecosystems suggests that the pathogenesis of all of these diseases could pivot upon a common disruption of the sulphated proteoglycan-growth factor mediated signalling systems. ALTHOUGH SOME CONJECTURE is unavoidable when it comes to the “swine flu pandemic,” some troubling aspects of this issue have been factually established or are coming into focus. For one thing, as AMERICAN FREE PRESS reported a couple months ago, pigs such as those on corporate farms in places like Mexico—farms “seeded” by the North American Free Trade Agreement, which helps corporate pig farmers operate outside the U.S. with almost no regulations—are major breeding places for viral illnesses. The animals are crammed together in tight, highly unsanitary and cruel conditions by the thousands. Meanwhile, President Obama just completed his “three amigos” conference in Guadalajara, Mexico, meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. They agreed, publicly anyway, that the feared spread of this flu must not allow cross-border trade and tourism to suffer, so no plans to fully secure the U.S. border with Mexico, to keep flu-carrying illegal aliens out of the U.S. during this “outbreak,” were announced. This is odd indeed, considering we’re supposedly facing a threat that justifies millions of planned vaccine doses for the United States alone. Many of the early swine flu cases were thought to have started in Mexico, if the overall conventional story is to be believed. Mark Smith of the Associated Press, displaying the usual religious faith that mainstream reporters have in official pronouncements, scribbled the following just after the summit:

In April, when Obama visited Mexico City, the first swine flu cases were just surfacing. Now, it’s a global epidemic that’s sickened more than 43,000 people in the United States and is blamed for 300 deaths. The toll in Mexico is at least 15,000 cases and 141 deaths; in Canada it’s 10,000 cases and 50 deaths. While the H1N1 virus is in a summer lull in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s expected to roar back in the fall. Public health officials are readying medicines [vaccines] and public education campaigns, hoping to curb the flu without disrupting vital cross-border trade and tourism. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control itself listed far different numbers online—on the very same day (Aug. 10) that Smith’s report was filed; moreover, the CDC has announced that its tracking of actual swine flu cases has largely ceased and flimsy statistical “models” are being used instead. That day, the CDC listed 436 swine flu “deaths” and 6,506 people “hospitalized” from it. Yet, Smith says, without attribution, that “43,000” have been “sickened.” A lot of people are “sickened” every day by the regular flu, colds and a number of other things. Most of those “sickened” recover and may or may not visit a hospital or doctor. As Cleveland, Ohio-based Dr. Sherri Tenpenny pointed out, if the CDC is correct that millions of people have been “infected” by swine flu but only had regular symptoms and recovered, then a natural immunity likely exists. So why rush to vaccinate America? Five major drug companies stand to make huge amounts of cash for producing millions of vaccine doses. Clinical trials just started at eight major institutions, according to Dr. Tenpenny, a noted researcher/ watchdog who has critiqued this $1.8 billion (so far) swine flu initiative that the federal government seems hell-bent on carrying out, with up to 100 million doses slated to be made by November. Then, enough to vaccinate every man, woman and child, a total of 300 million doses, is expected by March 2010, according to an overhead presentation Tenpenny gave on July 27, now posted online. The five companies that so far have received $1,816,989,920 in U.S. dollars, listed with their pie share, are: Novartis, 46 percent; Sanofi Pasteur, 26 percent; CSL (Melbourne, Australia), 19 percent; Med-Immune, 6 percent and GlaskoSmithKline, 3 percent. The eight places where trials are being carried out are: Baylor College of Medicine, Houston; Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati; Emory University , Atlanta; Group Health Cooperative, Seattle; Saint Louis University, St. Louis; University of Iowa, Iowa City; University of Maryland Medical School, Baltimore, more; and Vanderbilt University, Nashville. No more than 42 days will be allowed to see if the trial participants have a bad reaction, when auto-immune and arthritis problems can take months to show up. Tenpenny observed that the money to fund the vaccines also paid for squalene-based “adjuvants” (vaccine manufacturing agents known as ASO 3 and ASO 4, and MF-59). The first two have not been legalized for use in the U.S. and have been shown to cause crippling inflammation including extreme arthritis in lab mice, while “MF-59 is the squalene-based adjuvant that was in the anthrax vaccine” and is suspected to cause Gulf War illness, Tenpenny said. So by all indications a major vaccination plan, which the CDC claims is “voluntary,” is under way and schools likely will be a major venue, according to Tenpenny. Come September, October or no later than November, these “voluntary” vaccinations—that very likely will become forced vaccinations—are expected to visit your town, even as many Americans remember that the swine flu vaccine administered to 46 million Americans in 1976 was itself responsible for deaths and cases of paralysis—a literal example of “death by injection.” Some 4,000 Americans claimed damages from the 1976 program, amounting to $3.5 billion. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told The Washington Post July 10 that schools are “natural sites” to start this massive vaccination. Tenpenny says infants and children up to 4 years old are at the top of the list, followed by school-age kids; then children with asthma and pregnant women; then critical-response workers (first responders, nurses etc); and so on. Some reports say young people aged 18-24 are a major target group (others say 19-24) because they supposedly have been more adversely affected by the H1N1 flu than other groups. Americans are told to expect three shots this fall (the regular seasonal shot, followed by two H1N1 shots). School children who have never had a flu shot are targeted for four shots in the fall—twice for seasonal flu, twice for swine flu. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (a Bilderberg participant) has urged school superintendents to make plans to use their buildings for mass vaccinations and for vaccinating kids first. Website Educates Public About Vaccine Dangers

Dr. Sherri Tenpenny announced a website from which flyers and brochures can be downloaded and printed for community activists who want to warn their local leaders, first responders, area medical personnel, their local sheriff and others about what activists feel is a potentially tyrannical or unsafe H1N1 vaccination plan and its possible threat to freedom and public health. The user-friendly website is PandemicFluOnline.com. PandemicFluOnline’s core contributors are gearing up for Pandemic Flu Awareness Week (August 16-23), building the website for dramatically expanding the people’s knowledge on the historical, political and financial realities of the current pandemic response. They seek the participation of health freedom advocates, both individuals and organizations, as well as medical professionals to help dramatically expand awareness in an effort to sidestep what they believe will be “a vaccine-induced public health disaster of unprecedented proportions.” PandemicFluOnline is seeking donations to help fund newspaper/magazine advertisements, radio and TV spots, and YouTube clips. To get a more “official” perspective, a DHS spokes man suggested flu.gov. That site is premised on the vaccinations being completely necessary. Reading the website makes it difficult to believe that the program will be “voluntary,” as the CDC and other sources claim. State-by-state information is available at this website. Grant dollars are flowing to the states to assist them in their efforts. The 1918 pandemic is mentioned, as the federal and state governments characterize the current H1N1 “outbreak” as a probable plague. Mention climate change and everyone thinks of CO2 increasing in the atmosphere, the greenhouse effect heating the earth, glaciers melting, rising sea levels, floods, hurricanes, droughts, and a host of other environmental catastrophes. Climate mitigating policies are almost all aimed at reducing CO2, by whatever means.

Within the past several years, however, scientists have found that oxygen (O2) in the atmosphere has been dropping, and at higher rates than just the amount that goes into the increase of CO2 from burning fossil fuels, some 2 to 4-times as much, and accelerating since 2002-2003 [1-3]. Simultaneously, oxygen levels in the world’s oceans have also been falling [4] (see Warming Oceans Starved of Oxygen, SiS 44).

It is becoming clear that getting rid of CO2 is not enough; oxygen has its own dynamic and the rapid decline in atmospheric O2 must also be addressed. Although there is much more O2 than CO2 in the atmosphere - 20.95 percent or 209 460 ppm of O2 compared with around 380 ppm of CO2 – humans, all mammals, birds, frogs, butterfly, bees, and other air-breathing life-forms depend on this high level of oxygen for their well being [5] Living with Oxygen (SiS 43). In humans, failure of oxygen energy metabolism is the single most important risk factor for chronic diseases including cancer and death. ‘Oxygen deficiency’ is currently set at 19.5 percent in enclosed spaces for health and safety [6], below that, fainting and death may result.

The simultaneous decrease in ocean oxygen not only threatens the survival of aerobic marine organisms, but is symptomatic of the slow-down in the ocean’s thermohaline ‘conveyor belt’ circulation system that transports heat from the tropics to the poles, overturns surface layers of into the deep and vice versa, redistributing nutrients and gases for the ocean biosphere, and regulating rainfall and temperatures on the landmasses. This dynamical system is highly nonlinear, and small changes could make it fail altogether, with disastrous runaway effects on the climate [7] (Global Warming & then the Big Freeze, SiS 20). More importantly, it could wipe out the ocean’s phytoplankton that’s ultimately responsible for splitting water to regenerate oxygen for the entire biosphere, on land and in the sea [4].

Measuring O2 to better understand the earth’s carbon budget

Global CO2 records go back more than 50 years [8], but O2 measurement in combination with CO2 goes back barely two decades [9], and is already giving important information on the size of the carbon sink in the ocean relative to the land. For one thing, O2 and CO2 have very different solubility in seawater; while 99 percent of the O2 remains in the atmosphere, 98 percent of the CO2 is in seawater.

O2 and CO2 are exchanged in different processes on land, each having a different O2:CO2molar exchange ratio and thus distinguishable from one another. Fossil fuel combustion has a global average O2:CO2exchange ratio of about 1.4 moles of O2consumed per mole of CO2produced, whereas land plant photosynthesis generates an average net ratio of about 1.1 moles of O2 for each CO2fixed. These ratios can vary over spatial and temporal scales, depending on whether photosynthesis produces more oxygen than is consumed by respiration, and on the precise fossil fuel burnt (see later). The linkage between CO2 and O2 is broken, however, at the air-sea interface, where substantial O2 fluxes may be unaccompanied by fluxes of CO2 and vice versa.

By knowing the fossil fuel emissions and the exact value of the exchange ratios, one can separate the total CO2 uptake into land and ocean components on timescales of a few years. This has led to estimates of the land and ocean sinks to be 0.5 and 2.2 GtC/year respectively for the periods 1993 to 2003, with a fossil fuel increase rate of 6.5 GtC/y [10]. (see Box 1 for details on the calculations.)

A new atmospheric station has been established on the North Sea oil and gas production platform F3, 200 km north of the Dutch coast, which measures both CO2 and O2 continuously using the latest fuel cell and infrared technologies [11], and more precise data on sea-air exchanges are anticipated.

Measuring O2 and calculating land and ocean carbon sinks

It is difficult to measure changes in O2 because there is so much of it in the atmosphere compared with CO2. So a proxy is used instead. Changes are measured as differences in O2/N2 ratios expressed in “per meg” units against the ratio in a standard mixture kept at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla California in the USA, which pioneered the measurement.

This difference is used to define O2 concentration: 4.8 per meg are equivalent to 1 ppm (i.e., 1 mmole O2 per mole of dry air). By making the assumption that atmospheric N2 concentrations are constant, this definition of O22 fluxes as follows [9, 10]. concentration can be applied to derive O

An Atmospheric Potential Oxygen (APO) is defined, also in per meg units, as the sum of oxygen as determined n eq. (1) and the oxygen that went into producing the CO2 in the atmosphere.

APO per meg = D(O2/N2) + aB 4.8[CO2] (2)

where aB represents the O2:CO2 exchange ratio for land photosynthesis and respiration; and [CO2] is the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. This assumes that variations in APO can only be caused by air-sea exchanges of O2, N2 and CO2, and by combustion of fossil fuels.

Oceanic uptake of atmospheric CO2, however, reduces the observed upward trend in atmospheric CO22/N2 ratios. Thus the global budgets for atmospheric CO2and O2can be respectively represented by eqs (3) and (4). concentrations, but has no effect on the observed downward trend in O

Where DCO2 is the globally averaged observed change in atmospheric CO2 concentration, DO2 is the globally averaged observed change in atmospheric concentration, F is the source of CO2 emitted from fossil fuel combustion (and cement manufacture), O is the oceanic CO2 sink, B is the net land biotic CO2 sink (including biomass burning, landuse change and land biotic uptake); aF and aB are the global average O2:CO2 exchange ratios for fossil fuels and land biota respectively, and Z is the net exchange of atmospheric O2 with the ocean. All except exchange ratios are in units of moles per year.

Combining eqs 2, 3 and 4 gives:

DAPO = (-aF + aB)F – aBO + Z (5)

where DAPO is the globally averaged observed change in APO. Eq. 5 is used to obtain the oceanic sink, and then eq 3 is used to obtain the land biotic sink. This gives less uncertainty, as APO is less variable than the O2/N2 ratios.

Large decreases in atmospheric oxygen detected

Decrease in atmospheric O2 has been detected in stations around the world for the past decade, a consistent downward trend that has accelerated in recent years.

The largest fall in O2 was observed in the study of Swiss research team led by Francesco Valentino at University of Bern, for data collected at high altitude research stations in Switzerland and France. The Jungfraujoch (JFJ) station in Switzerland (3 580 m above sea level, 46o 33’N, 7o 50’E) is located on a mountain crest on the northern edge of the Swiss Alps. The Puy de Dôme station (1 480 m above sea level, 45o46’N, 2o 58’E) is situated west of the Alps at the summit of Puy de Dôme.

The research team confirmed the general upward trend for atmospheric CO2 and a downward trend in atmospheric O2. But since 2003 for JFJ, and mid 2002 for at Puy, there is a significant enhancement of O2 and CO2 trends compared to previous years. At JFJ, the rate of CO2 increase shifted up from 1.08 ppm (parts per million) for the years 2001-2002 to 2.41 ppm/y for 2003-2006; while the increase in D(O2/N2) and APO (measures of oxygen concentration, see Box 1) shifted downwards to greater extents from –2.4 ppm/y and -1.5 ppm/y to -9.5 ppm/y and -6.9 ppm/y respectively.

For Puy, CO2 increase changed from 2.43 ppm/y for 2001-2002 to 1.07 ppm/y for 2003-2004, followed by 2.4 ppm/y for the years 2005-2006; while the changes in D(O2/N2) and APO were -6.1 ppm/y and -3.7 ppm/y for 2001-2002, to -10.4 ppm/y and -7.6 ppm/y for the years 2002-2006. Averaged over all years – by removing the trends and plotting correlations between CO2 and O2, an O2:CO2exchange ratio of -1.9+0.7 is found for JFJ, and -1.8+0.5 for Puy; both significantly different from the 1.1 assumed for land photosynthesis and respiration i.e., 1.1 mole of O2 generated per mole of CO2 fixed, and -1.4 for burning fossil fuels, or 1.4 mole of O2 used up when one mole of CO2 is produced.

Over time, the O2:CO2exchange ratio for JFJ, which is much less exposed to local or regional anthropogenic influence because of its elevation and location, was -2.1+0.1 for the years 2001-2002 and -4.1+0.1 for the years 2003-2006. At Puy, the ratio was -4.2+0.1 for the period 2001-2003, and -7.3+0.1 for 2003-2006. These ratios are completely out of line with what could be expected from fossil fuels, and other data indicate that there has been no significant change in fossil fuel emission rates during the period 2003-2006.

The researchers speculated that the large decrease in atmospheric oxygen since 2003 could have been the result of oxygen being taken up by the ocean, either due to a cooling of water in the North Atlantic, or water moving northwards from the tropic cooling, both of which would increase the water’s ability to take up more oxygen. However, it would require unrealistic cooling to account for the change in O2concentration. And all the indications are that the ocean waters have warmed since records began [4].

In a second study, atmospheric O2 and CO2 data collected from two European coastal stations between 2000 and 2005 were analyzed [2]. Mace Head Ireland (53o20’N

9o54’W, 35 m above sea level), which serves as the marine background, relatively free from local fossil fuel consumption, and Station Lutjewad (53o24’N, 6o21’E) on the northern coast of The Netherlands 30 km to the northwest of the city of Groningen, which serves as a continental station receiving continental air with northerly winds. Similar trends were detected. Over the entire period at Lutjewad, CO2 increased by 1.7+0.2 ppm/y while oxygen decreased at -4.2+0.3 ppm/y; the corresponding figures for Mace Head were 1.7+0.1 ppm/y and -4.0+0.3 ppm/y. O2 is decreasing faster than can be accounted for by the rise in CO2. Furthermore, the decrease is not uniform throughout the entire period; instead it is much steeper between 2002 and 2005 at both stations, and is not accompanied by any change in the trend of CO2 increase. This sharp acceleration in the downward trend of atmospheric O2 from 2002-2003 onwards in Ireland and The Netherlands is in accord with the findings in Switzerland and France [1]. And this cannot be explained by a realistic increase in fossil fuel use, or oxygen uptake by cooler ocean waters; if anything, oxygen level in the oceans has also been falling [4]. So where and what is this oxygen sink that is soaking up oxygen?

Mystery of the oxygen sink

One distinct possibility that has been considered is that an extra oxygen sink has opened up on land as the result of human activities.

James Randerson at University of California Irvine was lead author on a report published in 2006 [12] pointing out that a decrease in atmospheric O2 could result if carbon within the land biosphere becomes more oxidized (sequestering more oxygen) through disturbance of natural ecosystems. This has changed the natural land cover, replacing it with plants that effectively remove more oxygen from the atmosphere.

Atmospheric exchange of O2 with land ecosystems is commonly expressed in terms of a net carbon flux from the atmosphere to the ecosystem (Fnet) and the net O2:CO2exchange ratio (Rnet):

By convention, positive sign indicates release into the atmosphere and negative sign sequestered in the land biosphere. The net rate is really a difference between two processes, one moving from atmosphere to biosphere, and the other in reverse, from biosphere to atmosphere, so eq. (6) can be written as follows.

where Fab is the atmosphere to biosphere carbon flux (the same as net primary productivity, NPP), Rab is the oxidative ratio related to NPP (moles O2 released per mole CO2 fixed), Fba is the biosphere to atmosphere return flux (a combination of respiration, fires and other losses), and Rba is the oxidative ratio related to the return flux (moles O2 consumed per mole CO2 released).

In an ecosystem at steady state (in dynamic balance), Fab and Fba will have the same magnitude. But the carbon in Fba is always offset in time from newly assimilated carbon in Fab because of carbon storage in the plant, dependent on plant tissue lifetimes, rates of litter and soil organic matter decomposition, and so on. Changes in Rab and Rba have the potential to cause relatively large changes in atmospheric O2, basically because of the time delays between fixation and the return flux due to carbon storage. The longer the carbon storage (turnover) time, the larger the effective offset between Fab and Fba; so O2 is consumed at a slower rate, and more of it remains in the atmosphere

Randerson and colleagues hypothesize that increasing levels of disturbance across natural ecosystems in recent decades has decreased Rab. This includes wide-spread deforestation and replacement of woody vegetation with pastures and crops in the tropics, an increase in fire activity and tree mortality and increasing the abundance of deciduous tree species and herbaceous plants in the boreal (northern) regions. Globally, this includes an increase in invasive species and increased disturbance of agricultural soils by plowing and grazing during the 20th century. All these activities increase the oxidation state of carbon in plant and soil organic matter. The increases in oxygen content of the resultant biomass causes a small sink for atmospheric O2 that has not been accounted for in atmospheric budgets.

Within a plant, lipids and lignin compounds have carbon that is more reduced, i.e., with more hydrogen and less oxygen; they have and large R values of 1.37 and 1.14 respectively, and are energetically more costly to build than compounds such as cellulose and starch, which have less hydrogen, more oxygen, and R value of 1.0. Thus, the expansion of agriculture and grazing during the 20th century has probably caused a decrease in the oxidative ratio of the plant biomass within these disturbed ecosystems. Using several simple models, the researchers showed that, indeed, small changes in Rab could lead to substantial decreases in atmospheric O2.

Another research team has raised the possibility that reactive nitrogen produced in making artificial fertilizers for agriculture could also be tying up more oxygen in plant tissue, soil organic matter and oceans in the form of nitrates [13].

The importance of oxygen accounting in climate policies

Change in land use, and increased oxidation of nitrogen could explain the long term steady decline in atmospheric O2, and may well also account for the sharp acceleration of the downward trend since 2002 and 2003.

These years happen to coincide with record rates of deforestation. In Brazil, 10 000 square miles were lost mainly to pasture land, soybean plantations and illegal logging, a 40 percent rise over the previous year [14]. Massive deforestation has continued in the Amazon and elsewhere, spurred by the biofuels boom [15]; it is estimated that nearly 40 000 ha of the world’s forests are vanishing every day.

The crucial role of forests and phytoplankton [4] in oxygenating the earth shows how urgent it is to take oxygen accounting seriously in climate policies. Reductionist accounting for CO2 alone is insufficient, and even grossly misleading and dangerous.

A case in point is the proposal of the International Biochar Initiative (IBI). ‘Biochar’ is charcoal produced to be buried in the soil that IBI has been promoting worldwide over the past several years [16] as a means of sequestering carbon from the atmosphere to save the climate and enhance soil fertility. It involves planting fast growing tree and various other crops on hundreds of millions of hectares of ‘spare land’ mostly in developing countries, to be harvested and turned into charcoal in a process that could produce crude oil and gases as low grade fuels. There are many excellent arguments against this initiative [17], but the most decisive is that it will certainly further accelerate deforestation and destruction of other natural ecosystems (identified as ‘spare land’). In the process, it could precipitate an oxygen crisis from which we would never recover [18] (Beware the Biochar Initiative, SiS 44).

Tom Blakeslee Comment left 19th August 2009 17:05:47 Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) may be a disaster for Oxygen becaise more Oxygen than carbon is buried when CO2 is sequestered. The US is spending billions to develop this disastrous approach that sequesters twice as much oxygen as carbon.
