New York City officials are to begin a three-month search for the remains of more than 1,000 missing victims of the 9/11 attacks - however, some relatives of the deceased say it is too little, too late, reports the BBC's Matthew Price in New York.

It is hard to believe that the best part of a decade on from the 11 September attacks, the debris from the World Trade Center site is still being examined.

That is partly a reflection of the enormity of the task, the huge amount of debris involved.

It is also, the relatives of some of those killed that day in 2001 contend, the result of years of delays that should have been avoided.

Among those relatives are Diane and Kurt Horning.

In their living room last week, Diane took out a plastic bag, and gently placed its contents on the table in front of her.

She picked up three keys, and turned them over in her hands. "World Trade Center" was engraved on one of them.

She pointed out a watch, battered, not an expensive one, missing its strap.

And then a credit card, bleached by age and the damage it suffered in the 9/11 attacks.

These and more, Diane says, are evidence that the city of New York has failed to adequately sift through the rubble of the World Trade Center.

"We've been told that anything larger than a quarter-inch has been removed from that site," she says, referring to the place where much of the rubble recovered from Ground Zero has been placed.

"Yet when we go there we find personal items that are certainly larger than a quarter of an inch and which may have meant the world to people. Consequently we worry that there may have been remains of the same size or bigger that were ignored."

Fresh search

It is a dreadful thought that eight-and-a-half years on from the destruction of the World Trade Center towers, the partial remains of some of those killed may be lying unceremoniously in a landfill site.

That site is at the rather unfortunately named Fresh Kills area of Staten Island, just across the harbour from Manhattan. The word "kill" comes from an old Dutch word for a riverbed and is used in much of this part of the US.

After the 9/11 attacks, much of the debris was taken to Fresh Kills - the former rubbish dump for the city. It was - at the time - sifted through.

Now some 844 cubic yards of debris more recently discovered in the past few years at Ground Zero are going to be searched.

Scientists led by New York's chief medical examiner will spend three months sifting through the new material.

New York authorities turned down several requests for an interview, but said in a statement that the city "continues to work to identify as many victims of the 9/11 attacks as possible".

"New methodologies are being utilized for unidentified remains from the original recovery, and for remains recovered during the renewed search," it said.

'A garbage tip'

The remains of more than 1,000 people killed in the 11 September attacks in New York have still not been found.

Some were incinerated in the firestorm that swept through the upper floors of the Twin Towers. Others were pulverised as the buildings collapsed.

But families like the Hornings fear that the remains of others have simply been overlooked.

As the new search begins, they are wondering why part of the debris is only now being uncovered and looked at. How much more lies at the site of the attacks, they ask? How much has simply not been sifted out?

"It is a good step," Mrs Horning says, referring to the new search, "but it comes a day late and a dollar short.

"They are not re-sifting. They are taking material that they are just now taking from the World Trade Center site that we asked them to explore years ago."

Moreover, she says, people like her are still fighting to have the debris that they believe contains the unrecognisable remains of their loved ones relocated, away from the landfill, and to a more fitting place of burial and mourning.

"I certainly hope with the new materials that they will do a very careful search, in case there's something," she says.

With the other material that was excavated earlier, she adds, they want a mass burial.

"It's a garbage tip. It was on top of that... where they dumped my son and the people with whom he died. And we don't do that with animals."

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Dozens of people who parked at the University of Central Florida for an event say they were set up after their cars were towed. They said event parking signs directed them to a lot, but more than 50 cars in that lot were towed. People said those signs and their cars were gone when they got back.

A viewer contacted WFTV after his car was towed Saturday, along with 52 others. All of them were in line to recover their cars at an impound lot and all of them attended the Glenn Beck show at UCF.

The people parked in a Kappa Sigma lot. Mike Vedder thinks they were set up. He doesn't know if it was a dislike of the conservative commentator or money.

“Maybe the have a deal with the tow truck company or maybe they got kickbacks under the table," Vedder said.

They all said an event parking sign clearly directed them into the lot. Students at the fraternity wouldn't comment, but WFTV caught up with the owner of Orange County Towing and Recovery, Ronald Hulbert.

"I have a lot at stake, a lot invested. I'm not going to lose it over a $125 tow, times 53, times 53, it was a good day," Ronald Hulbert said.

Hulbert admits he's never towed that many cars in one day before; he said it took him at least eight hours to tow all the cars. Each driver had to pay cash, netting him more than $6,600.

Vedder also had to pay $25 for a cab ride to the tow company.

UCF said, out of 30 recent events, it hasn’t had a problem, but Vedder said this was his last at that arena.

“I won’t come to anymore. I'm going to tell everyone else it's not a place I want to be," he said.

As much as we wanted to set it up behind the podium, we were respectful despite the numerous attempted bluffs to make us move, including having a government worker and the Utah Highway Patrol ask us on their behalf to move. The Tea Party Express wanted us to take down our sign, and alluded to the fact that we were not one of them, that we were a hate group, and suggested that we werent there for the same reasons as them. If they meant that we werent there to subvert and destroy the effectiveness and relevance of the Tea Party movement as they were then they were correct in their assumption.

On a side note, the Utah Highway Patrol Troopers are to be commended on refusing to be bullied into violating our rights, and were well aware of the fraudulent actions being perpetrated by this usurped Tea Party Express group. They were extremely respectful, as we were to them. They were a shining example of the correctness of law enforcement action. The lady in black who came and talked to us said that the Tea Party was only comprised four people, in which she was one of. She claimed to be a business woman with children, doing this for her children and in hopes of some day running for office. When I asked her who sponsored and paid for all of this, including four totally decked out tour buses, a couple 4×4 trucks, a tricked out Mercedes, (all of these vehicles had an expensive painted mural on the whole of their exteriors telling me that they probably werent rentals, including the buses) and several cameras, equiptment, tens of empolyees setting up and manipulating the crowd to dance and fill out raffle cards, which were either marketing tools or tracking tools, microphones and p.a. systems, and the actual speakers and performers (who were no doubt getting paid for their performances), she told me that she personally spent some days opening envelopes stuffed with 10-15 dollar donations from people just like me.

I assure you that the people there were not just like me, and heres why After she let us know how she supported our efforts and claimed that she supported our free-speech she had a couple of her goons go out into the audience (the people that were supposedly just like me) specifically the ones with American and Dont tread on me flags (of which most were made in China), and have them stand in front of our big blue banner, which simply stated Question 9/11 Demand Answers. In other words, this supposed grass-roots organization arranged for some of their supporters to attempt to squash our right to free speech. And so, for the last hour and a half of the Tea Party, we had about 7 people standing in front of our banner holding up flags. This was the most contradictory effort that a person attending a rally promoting free speech could have possibly made. And in between those people and our banner stood the two goons, at least one of which we thought was carrying a concealed weapon. But we stood our ground and didnt complain, turning the other cheek as our mission statement proclaims peaceful action and dissent, being the change we want to see in the world. A few moments before the end of the event, as we rolled up our big blue banner up and began walking toward the CNN Express bus which was part of the Tea Party Express caravan, one of the goons stated that it was about time you guys left. Before we walked away, I walked up to the woman in black well call her the black widow and thanked her for arranging the group of flag waivers to block our banner. She first looked surprised that I knew she had arranged it, and then, looking at me with a knowing smile, said you are very welcome and walked away. At least she knew that we knew she was full of crap, and that made me feel better. Now, while this type of abuse is common place towards us as we try and expose the truth about 9/11 to the public, I must say that the most painful part of this day was the corny and often times obviously contrived performances and speeches that we had to listen to as we stood there for the Tea Party (with the exception of a great rap group that rapped about the New World Order, and actually made the crowd of uncoordinated white people cheer and clap along, though not quite to the beat). Im not sure if they were actually a part of the tour, but kudos to them for their performance, the one highlight of the Tea Party Express. The Tea Party should be boycotted by anyone serious about change. Vote Them Out was the theme, while Republican candidates made speeches about how they would be somehow different. Perhaps Use Paper Ballots or No Computerized, Fixable Voting Machines might have been a better theme or how about HANG EM HIGH.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Rebecca Shaffer and her freshmen classmates at Shanksville-Stonycreek High School watched on television as three airplanes, hijacked by terrorists, crashed into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia.

Then broadcasters reported a plane flying over Southwestern Pennsylvania.

And the building shook.

"There was a fireball and flames above the tree line," said Shaffer, 23.

Some students hid under their desks. Others ran for the door.

"There was some panic, yelling and screaming," Shaffer said. "Then silence fell as we all turned and looked out the window. It was an eerie silence. People started to cry."

The students would later learn that United Flight 93, the fourth plane to be hijacked that morning, had crashed in a field not far from the school.

Officials say the hijackers intended to fly the airplane into a target in Washington, but some passengers and members of the crew fought back and forced the plane down in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County. Everyone aboard was killed.

The students said the crash rocked the sense of security in the small community of Shanksville, where all of the school district's 500 students attend classes in a single building.

In August, Shaffer and eight other students -- Joseph Skrinjorich, Amanda Duppstadt, Amanda Enos, Matthew Long, Jacob Miller, Brendon Noll, Laura Stutzman and Seth Walker -- representing the classes of 2002-05, gathered in their old high school to share memories of that day for a documentary.

Since 2005, Flight 93 National Memorial curator Barbara Black and oral history project assistant Kathie Shaffer, Rebecca's mother, have recorded more than 530 oral histories. Relatives and friends of the passengers and crew, first responders, eyewitnesses, residents and members of the media have told their stories.

Rebecca Shaffer's parents have been involved with Flight 93 since the crash. Her mother, a registered nurse and a member of the Flight 93 Task Force, served on the archive committee and as a volunteer ambassador at the temporary memorial. Her father, Terry Shaffer, is chief of the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department.

Rebecca Shaffer said she wondered that morning if her father was at the crash scene.

Shaffer recalled strangers and vehicles crowding Shanksville.

But "we didn't really look at them like strangers," she said. "They were there to help."

Shaffer has since graduated from Point Park University and works with AmeriCorps and for WQED in Pittsburgh.

She said she typically gets the same reaction from people they learn where she's from.

"Everyone wants to know where you were and what you were doing," she said. "That is not who I am. It's something that happened to our town.

"I don't mean any disrespect to the families of Flight 93," Shaffer said. "But before this all happened, it was still my hometown, still where we all grew up."

Joseph Skrinjorich, 24, a sophomore at Shanksville-Stonycreek on Sept. 11, is a student at Community College of Allegheny County and a member of the Army National Guard.

"We were still young at the time," he said in the video. "We didn't really know much about what was outside of this world that we had, here in these classrooms, so I remember having the same feelings of 'What's going on? This isn't safe anymore. We're supposed to be invincible.'"

Skrinjorich sang with a church choir at the first memorial for Flight 93.

"I've taken friends from college up to the crash site," he said.

Skrinjorich, who always intended to enter the military, said 9/11 reinforced that decision.

"It's not something I think a lot about any more," he said. "If I'm ever asked about it, I have no problem bringing up memories from that day."
Throughout the video, the young adults described the day the world turned its focus on their town.

Enos recalled hearing over the school's public address system that a plane had crashed in Somerset County.

"They said about it being in the old PBS strip mine," she said. "I just kind of started to freak out because that was in my grandma's backyard, and that was the only thing I could think of."

"You look at the world differently," Duppstadt said. "You do think it was only two or three seconds away from you. It could have changed your life forever if it was closer."

Long said he was overcome with feelings of, "This can't be happening here. This is America. This happens in other places. We're untouchable. And just that sense of security kind of being rocked."

Richard Snodgrass, owner of Snodgrass Industries in Pittsburgh, filmed the video.

"It was obvious they really wanted to get to telling their story," Snodgrass said. "It just sort of brimmed out of them. Each one had something particular about that experience that really lodged in their minds."

The school "was directly in the path," Snodgrass said. "With that load of fuel ... it would have wiped out an entire community's children."

Nearly 300 members of Congress have signed on to a declaration reaffirming their commitment to "the unbreakable bond that exists between [U.S.] and the State of Israel", in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The letter was sent in the wake of the severe recent tensions between Israel and the U.S. over the prior's decision to construct more than 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem, a project it announced during U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's visit to the region.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took advantage of his trip to the United States this week to try to mend the rift with the Obama administration, but he was greeted with cold welcome by the White House.

Netanyahu also met during his visit with members of Congress, who welcomed him with significantly more warmth.

The letter from Congress expresses its "deep concern" over the U.S.-Israel crisis, and emphasizes that lawmakers had received assurances from Netanyahu that the events leading up to the recent tensions would not be repeated.

Dear Secretary Clinton:

We are writing to reaffirm our commitment to the unbreakable bond that exists between our country and the State of Israel and to express to you our deep concern over recent tension. In every important relationship, there will be occasional misunderstandings and conflicts.

The announcement during Vice President Biden's visit was, as Israel's Prime Minister said in an apology to the United States, "a regrettable incident that was done in all innocence and was hurtful, and which certainly should not have occurred." We are reassured that Prime Minister Netanyahu's commitment to put in place new procedures will ensure that such surprises, however unintended, will not recur.

The United States and Israel are close allies whose people share a deep and abiding friendship based on a shared commitment to core values including democracy, human rights and freedom of the press and religion. Our two countries are partners in the fight against terrorism and share an important strategic relationship.

A strong Israel is an asset to the national security of the United States and brings stability to the Middle East. We are concerned that the highly publicized tensions in the relationship will not advance the interests the U.S. and Israel share. Above all, we must remain focused on the threat posed by the Iranian nuclear weapons program to Middle East peace and stability.

From the moment of Israel's creation, successive U.S. administrations have appreciated the special bond between the U.S. and Israel.

For decades, strong, bipartisan Congressional support for Israel, including security assistance and other important measures, have been eloquent testimony to our commitment to Israel's security, which remains unswerving.

It is the very strength of this relationship that has, in fact, made Arab-Israeli peace agreements possible, both because it convinced those who sought Israel?s destruction to abandon any such hope and because it gave successive Israeli governments the confidence to take calculated risks for peace.

In its declaration of independence 62 years ago, Israel declared: "We extend our hand to all neighboring states and their peoples in an offer of peace and good neighborliness, and appeal to them to establish bonds of cooperation and mutual help with the sovereign Jewish people settled in its own land."

In the decades since, despite constantly having to defend itself from attack, Israel has repeatedly made good on that pledge by offering to undertake painful risks to reach peace with its neighbors.

Our valuable bilateral relationship with Israel needs and deserves constant reinforcement.

As the Vice-President said during his recent visit to Israel: "Progress occurs in the Middle East when everyone knows there is simply no space between the U.S. and Israel when it comes to security, none. No space."

Steadfast American backing has helped lead to Israeli peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan. And American involvement continues to be critical to the effort to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

We recognize that, despite the extraordinary closeness between our country and Israel, there will be differences over issues both large and small.

Our view is that such differences are best resolved quietly, in trust and confidence, as befits longstanding strategic allies. We hope and expect that, with mutual effort and good faith, the United States and Israel will move beyond this disruption quickly, to the lasting benefit of both nations.

We believe, as President Obama said, that "Israel's security is paramount" in our Middle East policy and that "it is in U.S. national security interests to assure that Israel?s security as an independent Jewish state is maintained."

Revelle was a powerful man, a noteworthy scientist and a significant force in San Diego in the 1950s. There is no doubt he is largely responsible for the respect given Scripps Institute of Oceanography and for locating the University of California at San Diego, UCSD, in La Jolla.

While serving as Director of Scripps, Revelle and one of his researchers wrote the first modern scientific paper that linked carbon dioxide released into the air from the burning of fossil fuels and the greenhouse effect and the warming of temperatures. This triggered an avalanche of research that eventually became the impetus behind the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the entire global warming movement.

In the 1960s Revelle moved to Harvard to establish a Center for Population Studies. There is where Professor Revelle encounter student Albert Gore. He involved Gore and his class mates in tabulating the data from a carbon dioxide study. Gore was so impressed he wrote about it in his 1992 book, " Earth in the Balance ". That became the story for the movie "an Inconvenient Truth". The Oscar and Nobel Peace Prize and some people say 100 million dollars came from that effort. There is no doubt Roger Revelle had a major impact on Vice President Gore's life.

But there is a twist. In 1988 Roger Revelle was having major second thoughts about whether carbon dioxide was a significant greenhouse gas. He wrote letters to two Congressmen about it. And in 1991 he co-authored a report for the new science magazine Cosmos in which he expressed his strong doubts about global warming and urged more research before any remedial action was taken.

At that point Mr. Gore pronounced Revelle as senile and refused to debate global warming. He continues to refuse to debate today. Many offers of 10s of thousands of dollars have been made such a debate. Today Gore sequestered the media at this event and set forth rules, no questions, no interviews.

I have learned that in 1991 Roger Revelle made a speech at the high powered, very private Summer enclave of powerful men and politicians at the Bohemian Grove in Northern California, where he apologized that his research sent so many people in the wrong direction on global warming.

He worried about the political fallout from the UN IPCC and Al Gore. A man named Donn Michael Schmidtman who lives in the San Francisco area was there that day and remembers the Revelle speech very well. He has told about it in some detail.

So think of the irony. Today Al Gore received the first Roger Revelle award, an honor named after the man who sent Gore on his global warming campaign.

But the truth is; Revelle realized that it was a false alarm and the science was flawed before he died.

Revelle died of a heart attack in 1991.

It would be interesting to know if Revelle had lived whether he would have approved of this award tonight or perhaps be joining me at the International conference of global warming skeptics in New York next week.

Whenever someone insists too strongly about something not being true, we tend to suspect that maybe it is. In their denials of involvement in 9/11, do Israel’s apologists “protest too much”?

While it would take a small book to adequately document the Israeli connection to 9/11—as Antiwar.com editor Justin Raimondo has attempted in The Terror Enigma—let us briefly recall some of the more intriguing facts as reported in the mainstream media, involving dancing Israelis, Odigo warnings, and Zim’s timely move.

The story of the five Israelis who were seen celebrating and filming as the Twin Towers burned and collapsed was investigated by Neil Mackay in Scotland’s Sunday Herald. The so-called “dancing Israelis” worked for Urban Moving Systems, later deemed to be a Mossad front by the FBI. Despite failing numerous polygraph tests, the young men were deported to Israel two months later. Back home, several of the men appeared on a TV chat show, in which one of them amazingly said, “Our purpose was to document the event.”

Two employees of Odigo, an Israeli instant messaging service, received messages two hours before the World Trade Center attack on September 11 predicting the attack would happen, Ha’aretz reported.

Zim-American Israeli Shipping Co., part-owned by the Israeli government, moved their North American headquarters from the 16th floor of the WTC to Norfolk, Virginia one week before the 9/11 attacks, incurring a $50,000 fine for breaking its lease, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Despite being in the public domain, none of these relevant facts are mentioned in the 9/11 Commission’s 567-page report.

Moreover, Philip Zelikow, the executive director of the 9/11 Commission, is concerned about the spread of such inconvenient facts to the wider public. “Our worry,” he says, “is when things become infectious…. [then] this stuff can be deeply corrosive to public understanding. You can get where the bacteria can sicken the larger body.”

But was Zelikow speaking here as an American government official or as a pro-Israeli insider?

In the same month that he authored the so-called “Bush Doctrine” of preemptive war, which provided the justification for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Zelikow made this candid admission: “Why would Iraq attack America or use nuclear weapons against us? I’ll tell you what I think the real threat (is) and actually has been since 1990—it’s the threat against Israel.”

Yet, instead of investigating the Israeli connection, Zelikow used the 9/11 Commission to sell the Israeli-inspired Iraq war to the American people.



Zelikow’s “bacteria” quote is cited in a 2008 paper entitled “Conspiracy Theories.” Co-authored by Cass Sunstein, who currently heads President Obama’s White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the main focus of the paper “involves conspiracy theories relating to terrorism, especially theories that arise from and post-date the 9/11 attacks.”

Rather than attempting to debunk such theories, Sunstein and Vermeule claim that those who suspect Israeli involvement in 9/11 suffer from a “crippled epistemology.” This, the authors argue, is due to “a sharply limited number of (relevant) informational sources.” In other words, “they know very few things, and what they know is wrong.”

To counter these suspicions, Sunstein recommends “cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents, or their allies (acting either virtually or in real space, and either openly or anonymously) will undermine the crippled epistemology of those who subscribe to such theories. They do so by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity.”

It could, of course, be argued that Sunstein’s work also suffers from a crippled epistemology—his research relies heavily on pro-Israeli sources, most notably the notorious Islamophobe Daniel Pipes.

Pipes is a bit of an expert on conspiracy theories, having written two books on the subject. “Conspiracism provides a key to understanding the political culture of the Middle East,” Pipes opines in The Hidden Hand: Middle East Fears of Conspiracy. “It helps explain much of what would otherwise seem illogical or implausible, including the region’s record of political extremism and volatility, its culture of violence, and its poor record of modernization.”

Like Sunstein, Pipes is concerned that many in the region suspect Israeli involvement in 9/11. “The implications in the Middle East are quite profound,” Pipes told the LA-based Jewish Journal. “It’s one more brick in the edifice of fear and loathing of Israel and the Jews.”

In the absence of a proper 9/11 investigation, there remains a broad range of opinion about the precise nature of Israeli complicity. In The Terror Enigma, Justin Raimondo tentatively concludes that the Israeli connection to 9/11 amounts to “foreknowledge and passive collaboration with Bin Laden’s jihad.” Other experts, such as Alan Sabrosky, are less circumspect. Dr. Sabrosky, former director of studies of the Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College, has recently stated that “it is 100 percent certain that 9/11 was a Mossad operation. Period.”

Either way, it’s hardly surprising that some of the most obsessive critics of 9/11 “conspiracy theories” have ties to Israel. If Americans ever find out that their “staunchest ally” had anything to do with the mass murder of their fellow citizens on September 11, 2001, the would-be conspiracy debunkers have good reason to be afraid.

Antiwar protesters crashed a Beverly Hills book-signing by former Bush White House figure Karl Rove, creating a chaotic scene that ended the event early.

A group of protesters arrived at the Saban Theatre, where Rove was signing "Courage and Consequences: My Life As a Conservative In The Fight" to an audience of about 100 people.

The incident was captured on tape by CBS 2 News. The video shows protesters coming up to Rove, calling him a war criminal, among other things.

But Rove fought back. "With all due respect, this goes to show the totalitarianism of the left. They don't believe in dialogue, they don't believe in the 1st Amendment," he told the crowd."

At one point, Rove told a protester, "Get the heck out of here.... This man is a lunatic."

Rove was eventually forced to leave the stage, and those who came to hear him speak did not get their books signed.
